Athletic Training: Why Choose a Kinesiologist?

Updated: Aug 14

Professional Kinesiologists are university-trained health and fitness professionals that use movement to achieve specific goals. In sport, those goals include increased power production, higher sprint speeds, more agility, and a bigger gas tank to work harder for longer.

What's special about Zen Kinesiology?

Everything a kinesiologist does must be evidence-based. Regardless of the nature of your goals, a kin will find science-backed methods to achieve them. Zen Kinesiology adds more value with experience: 10+ years of strength and conditioning training, two Junior World Championships of Powerlifting, and dozens of podium finishes in strength sports. This experience combines with a robust academic background to provide the information, motivation, and skills needed to take athletes to the next level of success.

Professional Kinesiologists are set apart from other fitness professionals by:

  • Minumum requirement of a 4-year degree

  • Stringent entry & competence requirements from the CKA

  • Nationally-enforced ethical & professional standards

  • Industry-leading insurance requirements

  • A broad scope of practice encompassing various modes and methods to achieve success.

What does Zen Kinesiology actually offer?

Imagine if a trainer had a broad education focused on sports performance, health, mental fortitude, chronic disease management, metabolism, ethics, human anatomy, biology, exercise physiology, and critically understanding and applying research. Now imagine that trainer had the most robust insurance in the game, a constantly-evolving continuing education standard to uphold, and practical learning experience under one of the most seasoned exercise and sports scientists in the country.

That's what you get from Zen Kinesiology.

Services include:

  • Personal training: Zen Kinesiology provides all the services of your average personal trainer, and more. General health, fitness improvements, long-term rehabilitation, addressing chronic conditions, occupation-specific fitness, fat loss, strength training, and athletic performance all fall under my scope of practice.

  • Injury prevention: Zen Kin understands the importance of building up weak points. By finding, assessing, and systematically eliminating weak points, a kinesiologist can bulletproof injury-prone athletes.

"Weak things break." - Louie Simmons, Founder, Westside Barbell
  • Improved Performance: The gym is not the playing field. The gym is practice, and everything we do in the gym should better prepare us to perform. It doesn't matter if that performance is a hard-fought backcheck at the end of four minute shift, or if it's moving pain-free through a tough workday, Zen Kin's programming is focused on improving performance, not just making you tired and sore.

  • Injury rehabilitation: Injuries are a common part of living an athletic lifestyle, and Zen Kin provides rehabilitation services to nuild back better, faster. Alongside Countryside Chiropractic in Aberdeen, Zen Kin offers treatment programs for musculoskeletal injuries.

  • Movement assessment & prescription: Mobility, balance, strength, endurance, and mental fortitude all play in to an athlete's bottom line. Zen Kin can systematically & objectively assess an athlete's movement and strength, then build programs to eliminate deficiencies to build a better athlete.

  • Mobility & stretching: Many people focus on building muscle strength in the gym, but it's important to also train muscle length through stretching and dedicated mobility work. Adequate mobility can reduce chances of injury, improve strength, decrease recovery time and add to overall performance.

  • Strength: Strength is Zen Kin's forte. Being stronger improves every aspect of an athlete's performance. Remember that big isn't strong, strong is strong, and strength of body and mind play into an athlete's overall effectiveness.

"Strength is never a weakness." - Mark Bell

Does my benefits package cover kinesiology services?

It depends on your specific insurance package or healthcare spending account, and you'll need to contact your provider to be sure, but some Canadian extended healthcare benefits providers do cover kinesiology! Exercise is a proven solution for improving health, reducing downtime, preventing workplace injuries and reducing call-outs, meaning if your insurance doesn't cover kin, it should!
